This is the part of the morning ritual that happens before anything gets made: pods, measuring spoons, a couple of little syrup bottles and a few wrapped chocolates, laid out on clean off-white in soft morning light. I staged it to capture a routine a lot of us share, usually half-awake.

I usually reach for black and white when it's about light and shadow. This one is in color because the color is the whole show: gold, copper, violet and magenta, lined up like they're waiting their turn.

No. 2 came out of the same session. I couldn't pick one, so both made it, and the Morning Ritual Shelfie Duo has the pair in 5x7.
