Sometimes you go out looking for one thing and find something else entirely.

I was out looking for birds. Camera up, eyes on the treetops, waiting for something with feathers to sit still for half a second. The birds, being birds, had other plans. Somewhere in all that waiting came a turn of the head — a shift of the eyes to the edge of things — and there it was, right above me. Dark beams sweeping out in a long curve, slat after slat fanning across a bright, broken sky. A whole structure built to hold up a lot of nothing, just so people could stand in its shade. I forgot all about the birds.
